Artificial Grass Offers Real Benefits for Drought Sensitive Areas of Colorado

Several homeowners in Colorado Springs area are installing artificial lawns that look perfectly manicured and remain beautifully green year round. And they don't use valuable water to stay green. These lawns need no watering, no mowing and no fertilizing. One popular artificial lawn is called AstroLawn® and is made by AstroTurf LLC.

Dave and Maggie Rosazza of Colorado Springs decided to install AstroLawn® in the front yard of their Woodmen Hills home near Falcon after their sod lawn started declining from the blistering heat. They were frustrated trying to grow grass during a water shortage. Now they have a picture perfect lawn with no hassles. And the Rosazza's think their new lawn looks and feels great – like real grass.

AstroLawn® comes in 15-foot wide strips that are installed over a smooth, compacted soil and rock base for drainage. The seams are sealed the same way an indoor carpet is laid. The grass carpet can be cut into any shape to fit all landscape designs. It simply needs an occasional fluffing with a carpet rake. Debris like twigs and leaves can be removed with a leaf blower.

The turf's backing is permeable so water passes through into the soil while the carpet acts as a weed barrier. AstroLawn® is expected to last 10 to 15 years depending on wear and tear and exposure to chemicals.

Artificial lawns are so popular, one Colorado AstroLawn® dealer says he used to make his bread and butter for years landscaping real lawns. Now he admits inquiries about artificial lawns are outnumbering inquiries about the real thing.

In an area were water is such a precious commodity, this is no surprise.
